Research abstract

Hydroplane Limited has developed a light weight and compact modular 100 kW hydrogen fuel cell powerplant for mobile energy storage for a range of operational use cases. We have built and demonstrated our powerplant in a laboratory environment and aircraft operational environment (single engine aircraft movement tests) under a Phase 2 Agility Prime Air Force STTR.ĀThe compact powerplant consists of a low temperature polymer exchange membrane hydrogen fuel cell stack, thermal management system, electric air compressor, electric motor (for vehicle applications), control software, and hydrogen feed system. It is a high efficiency (>50%), low thermal signature (max temp 70 C), and lowĀacoustic noise, ideal for DON stealth applications on the ground, at sea, and at altitude. In addition, from a sustainment perspective,Āhydrogen fuel cell energy storageĀhas a 5x toĀ10x improvement in specific energy as compared toĀLithium Ion batteries, for applications that require extended duration use such as at sea, in air, and in convey missions. Hydroplane is a two-time awardee of the US Air Force Agility Prime Program and Awardee of the California Energy Commission CaltestBed program, thanks to our novel technology and relevance to multiple energy storage use cases.
