Research abstract

The Gesture Recognition Interface for Platforms (GRIP) represents a revolutionary shift in the realm of Augmented Reality (AR) and other wearable systems user interaction. Unlike traditional interfaces, GRIP seamlessly blends into the user's environment, enabling a hands-free, intuitive connection with AR content, essential for high-stakes fields like defense and emergency response. At its core, GRIP utilizes state-of-the-art software libraries to process Inertial Measurement Unit (IMU) data, translating them into specific, detectable events. These events, or gestures, serve as commands within the AR environment. By eliminating the need for cumbersome physical controllers or voice commands, GRIP offers a streamlined user experience, with potential applications ranging from defense to healthcare and industrial settings. In the proposed Phase I effort, our primary objectives are: Curate a component-level Bill of Materials (BOM) that details the hardware and software integrations essential for GRIP's operation. Prototype exemplar Responsive Motion Gestures (RMGs) to trigger events in an AR Head-Mounted Display (HMD). Garner end-user feedback from Air Force Special Warfare Operators, refining the gesture database to cater to their specific needs. Design an initial communication channel between GRIP and contemporary devices, such as smartphones or AR HMDs. Fortify our partnership with potential stakeholders like AFSOC and PEO ISR/SOF, securing their endorsement for a subsequent Phase II endeavor. Beyond its immediate applications, GRIP is also designed for rapid evolution. By utilizing pre-existing technologies and integrating feedback at every stage, GRIP is not just a product but a living, adaptable toolset for the modern age of augmented reality interaction.
