Research abstract

To address AFLCMCÆs need for accelerated airworthiness certification, RedShred proposes to develop AIRworthiness Model Automation for cerTification Evaluations (AIRMATE), a system based on a new design that utilizes previously developed mature components combined with advances in natural language processing with large language models (LLMs). Specifically, the innovation in automated extraction of model-based systems engineering (MBSE) artifacts from legacy documents will enable the system to dramatically reduce the time to bring existing airworthiness criteria into the MBSE realm. Consequently, AIRMATE offers to reduce the time required for managing the lengthy airworthiness process, which directly addresses the DAFÆs requirements to accelerate change and reduce the time to deliver new capabilities.Ā In Phase I, RedShred will fulfill all Phase I requirements specified, demonstrating the feasibility of extracting SysML requirements models from certification guide documents like the MIL-HDBK-516C. In Phase II, RedShred will integrate this into a system that could provide airmen access to perform similar extraction on additional types of legacy documents. AIRMATE directly addresses mandates to move from document-based to model-based acquisitions to accelerate the pace of innovation DAF-wide by converting documented-oriented certification processes like airworthiness certification into a model-based process in support of digital acquisition and accelerated fielding of new systems.
