Research abstract

In today's cybersecurity landscape, safeguarding virtualized environments, especially those under VMware's ESXi hypervisor, has become crucial. With cyber threats targeting these environments growing in sophistication, there's an urgent need for innovative defense solutions. This Phase I SBIR proposal introduces the adaptation of Vali Cyber's ZeroLock solution, tailored for VMware ESXi environments. ZeroLock employs advanced behavioral analysis and machine learning for real-time threat detection and response. Its strength lies in using unsupervised learning algorithms to model normal system behavior, flagging anomalies as potential threats. This proposal aims to optimize these capabilities for ESXi hypervisors and their hosted VMs. A standout feature is ZeroLock's agentless deployment. Unlike traditional security tools that rely on agents and impose performance overheads, ZeroLock's agentless approach ensures seamless ESXi integration, analyzing network traffic and OS-level telemetry without heavyweight agents. This ensures optimal performance while enhancing security. The solution also introduces automatic policy generation, creating dynamic whitelists of benign behavior to securely lockdown ESXi hosts. This not only minimizes the attack surface but ensures legitimate operations remain uninterrupted. Given the rise in ransomware attacks on ESXi servers, ZeroLock's defense against such threats is paramount. Preliminary tests indicate its capability to halt over 99% of ransomware attacks, outperforming many competitors. For successful ZeroLock integration into ESXi, this study will identify key stakeholders within the USAF/USSF and DoD. Capturing their specific requirements ensures the solution is tailored for maximum efficacy. In summary, this Phase I SBIR proposal offers a proactive approach to ESXi cybersecurity. By adapting ZeroLock's capabilities to ESXi's unique needs, it promises enhanced security and robust defense against evolving cyber threats, safeguarding critical virtualized workloads of the Air Force and DoD.
