Research abstract

ThereÆs an urgent need for a novel class of structural composites across the DoD, due to the limitations of current materials and increasing needs of new requirements. Critical applications include lightweight composite airframe, liners for hydrogen storage tanks and supply lines, composite-based fastener to eliminate galvanic corrosion issues, modular tarmac material, amongst many other. Structural self-healing composites offer new promise for their mechanical properties and for their ability to self-repair upon activation. They have been limited to laboratory curiosities until our advancements.ĀOur established LWSHC offer an inexpensive solution to several important DoD problems, from their stability, compatibility with existing systems and their potential use in drop-in replacement applications. These materials are easily tailorable ¢ self-healing conditions can be tuned to a specific temperature and time, resistance to corrosion, H2 embrittlement and surface wear can easily be tuned by direct change of already established formulation. Our SHCsĀcan be processed by a large number of existing techniques such as hot rolling, injection molding, extrusion and pressing, making them ideal for rapid insertion into existing fabrication techniques.
