Research abstract

Perfusion Medical is developing a new intravenous solution developed with over $12M in U.S. Army funding at Virginia Commonwealth University that has been validated in 12 animal studies to improve outcomes in shock, septic shock, and acute kidney injury (AKI). One study showed that patients given Perfusion MedicalÆs PEG-20k/8k had a 85-90% reduction in markers associated with kidney failure ĀŚ back to normal baseline function Ś compared to standard IV fluid treatment. ĀAKI arises in many medical and surgical situations and is highly correlated with morbid outcomes (death, sepsis, prolonged ICU stay, etc.) AKI treatment options are limited to blood pressure and electrolyte control, but PerfusionÆs PEG-20k/8k would be the first treatment option that addresses the vascular restriction associated with AKI. Developed with over $12M in U.S. Army funding at Virginia Commonwealth University and backed by 4 U.S patents, PEG-20k/8k has been validated and de-risked through its strikingly successful treatment of otherwise lethal shock in both rodents and swine across 12 animal and pre-clinical studies. In one swine study, survival to 24 hours increases to 100% with PEG-20k solution from 0% in the military pre-hospital standard of Hextend and 16.7% in the civilian standard of whole blood infusion3. Perfusion has also received $250K in grants from the National Institutes of Health and $3M from the Defense Health Agency. In a standardized rodent model of renal ischemia (inadequate blood supply to an organ) ¢ clinically a frequent cause of AKI Ś patients given PEG20k had a 85-90% reduction in markers associated with kidney failure (serum creatinine) at 4 days Ś back to normal baseline function Ś compared to patients given standard IV fluid treatment with lactated ringer.
