Research abstract

Epirus proposes a Multidirectional, Multifrequency Ship-based Meteorological Satellite Receiver using an active electronically steered phased array with no moving parts.Ā To achieve full hemispherical coverage, Epirus is proposing a trade study of an 8-sided frustum with 4-fold symmetry and comparisons with more traditional geometries such as capped cylinder or semi-spherical conformal arrays utilizing Commercial Off-The Shelf (COTs) electronics for cost efficiency and future upgradability. To achieve high resolution coverage of multiple frequencies and modulations, the receiver will consist of 3-4 sets of arrays (working at different frequency bands: low frequency, medium frequency, and high frequency). Our system will include a signal processing step for each frequency range to reduce computational load on a central processor. The frustum is mechanically fixed with electronically steered agile beams that maintain link with the weather satellites based on external PNT information, satellite ephemeris data, and ship based inertial measurements (for electronic beam pointing compensation of ship tilt due to oceanic conditions). Epirus provides the Navy with dozens of years of design experience at major defense contractors on antenna and RF systems in use today. Epirus possesses state-of-the-art antenna and signal processing capabilities to design, simulate, prototype and test at its Torrance, CA facilities. This includes licenses for major RF simulation platforms, onsite RF testbeds as well anechoic chambers. We have proven our ability to support rapid transition of a complex and large phased array, from initial design to functional prototypes, through our Leonidas product line and look forward to replicating this speed-to-market with the Navy.
