Research abstract
This Phase I Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) proposal by Apothym Technologies Group (ATG) aims toĀdevelop an innovative multiband antenna whose directionality is governed by a virtual gimbal to eliminate incidencesĀof mechanical failure and allow access to the latest generation of meteorological satellites. To give the best value to the government, ATG will focus on two main objectives in the six-month base effort: 1) AĀtrade study of three options and configurations of the proposed antenna technology approach to research theĀperformance,Āconstraints, challenges, and options for designing a virtual gimble antenna that can operate in a seaborne environment and supports L through X band.Ā 2) Down-select the optimal design that meets the NavyÆs requirements and develop a cost estimate to develop and build the proposed solution. The option period, also lasting six months, will focus on further optimization of the selected design and requirements for integrationĀonto the platform and onboard Environmental Satellite Receiver Processor (ESRP) system. The team will utilize computer simulations and modeling tools to validate the antennaĀdesign approaches. At the Phase I SBIR outcome, ATG will provide the SWaP and cost data for the best design option that meets all the requirements identified in the SBIR. Key personnel include Dr. Shawn Rogers as the Principal Investigator.Ā Dr Rogers is an electromagnetics engineer with extensive experience in antenna design and electromagnetic bandgap structures.Ā In addition, ATG will team with The Pennsylvania State University -ĀComputational Electromagnetics and Antennas Research Lab (PSU-CEARL) who are subject matter experts of the proposed antenna technology and will assist with advanced modeling and simulation for the trade study.
