Research abstract

When Russia invaded Ukraine in 2014, Russian forces were able to quickly find and destroy Ukrainian command posts by using a combination of Unmanned Combat Aerial Vehicles (UCAVs) and electronic signature detection. This targeting of assets through detection of electronic signature and the use of loitering munitions to destroy command posts is a vulnerability that endangers the warfighter. Therefore, there is a great need to mask command posts from such electronic signature detection. In response to these challenges, Notch proposes an innovative approach as part of this Phase I effort. We aim to leverage electromagnetic (EM) metasurface technology to create a reduced electronic signature for Army assets through a combination of radar absorption and steering of electronic signature/communications away from detection.
