Research abstract
SpiderOak’s “Call Up” will employ novel software applications of technology that can enable commercial and US Government integration, and specifically enable the Commercial Space Augmentation Reserve (CASR) concept. The effort will also serve to inform USSF and DAF’s strategy and milestones leading to the formal stand-up of the CASR concept. SpiderOak will develop, integrate, and test software-based controls based on the SpiderOak-developed OrbitSecure platform that can both secure and provide for seamless operational transition in time of “call up” for any commercial space assets that would subsequently fall under DoD command and control (C2). Successful call-up of the CASR concept requires three elements: 1) secure and flexible role-based access controls (RBAC) system to manage government authority and control as well as implement the varying need-based policies and constraints that go with the Executive Action of enacting CASR; 2) the ability to seamlessly include the commercial assets into DoD scheduling, mission management, and C2 commands from USG over “untrusted” commercial networks; and 3) secure and trusted data transport from the space vehicles (SVs) themselves to provide services on-demand in a time of crisis. SpiderOak will leverage its existing OrbitSecure software to demonstrate a solution for the RBAC, data orchestration, and data security required to implement the fully integrated CASR. Upon completion, SpiderOak will demonstrate a complete capability package ready to empower the CASR with the flexibility, security, and orchestration required to provide resources to the mission when duty calls while providing the flexible application configuration to periodically and seamlessly test a CASR “call up” with commercial entities. Ultimately, resilient cybersecure methods to share information between heterogenous autonomous edge systems are critical to bring commercial and foreign partner assets into modern proliferated hybrid space architectures. SpiderOak has a unique opportunity to bridge these two worlds with an agile software approach to secure interoperability. This approach still benefits USSF even without CASR simply due to the need to seamlessly integrate commercial space capabilities with those of the US Government.
