Research abstract

Mainstream Engineering will develop a lightweight, reliable canine respiratory monitoring apparatus for accurate measurement of VO2,Max and other metabolic signatures for military working dogs (MWDs) and similar breeds. The canine mask will feature a novel sealing system for a reliable fit and negligible leaking out of the mask. This seal ensures unidirectional flow for accurate breathes per minute (BPM) and tidal volume (VT) measurements. Mainstream will work with the University of Florida (UF) College of Veterinary Medicine (CVM) to design and develop the canine mask. This includes methods to continuously monitor O2 and CO2 concentrations, BPM, VT, and metabolic measurements such as the amount of rate of O2 consumption (VO2) and amount of CO2 exhaled per unit time (VCO2). UF CVM has the experience and expertise for canine (e.g., German Shepherds) and animal testing and has the facilities and equipment for treadmill testing.  Phase I will address the technical feasibility of the design and performance of the canine respiratory monitoring apparatus. Phase II will culminate in prototype evaluation with animal testing on MWDs or similar breeds with all regulatory certifications and approvals.
