Research abstract

CRG is developing an advanced Electrical Load Management System (ELMS) for V-22 aircraft to more fully utilize the existing aircraft electric power source capacity. CRG’s solution utilizes solid state power controllers (SSPCs) which provides improvements to power distribution, load control, fault recognition/isolation, and protection and automation with features including: 1) monitoring bus power quality and excess power source capacity; 2) monitoring status of solid-state power controllers, smart relays, and other circuit protective devices; 3) maintaining data bus communications within the electrical load management system and with other aircraft systems; 4) utilizing smart load shedding to optimize aircraft performance and prevent power source overload during periods of high demand; 5) balancing loading of power sources to improve power source reliability; 6) collecting fault data that can reduce troubleshooting time by maintainers; and 7) providing crew alerts and status advisories. This approach will support growing power demand on the V-22 and is applicable to other military and commercial aircraft as well.
