Research abstract

ATCorp’s Reliable Medical Information Delivery in DIL environments (ReMIDe) provides resilient networking for continuous Electronic Medical Records (EMR) operations in severely limited communications environments. ReMIDe addresses two major limitations of current approaches: 1) inability of medical information delivery systems to provide timely bi-directional synchronization of patient care information across the care continuum in stressed networks; 2) breakdown of existing disruption tolerant networking (DTN) protocols in mobile ad hoc and/or crypto-partitioned environments. Overcoming limitations of traditional client-server approaches, ReMIDe improves casualty care across military care echelons without costly changes to the current EMR systems. Through virtualized network functions, ReMIDe operates transparently to the client applications, without changing existing applications’ graphical user interface, incurring no additional burden or learning curve to the end user. In Phase I, ATCorp developed a detailed design of the system architecture and the associated resilient networking mechanisms, and proved the feasibility and advantages of the new concept through proof-of-concept prototyping. The proposed Phase II effort will implement a TRL 6 software prototype that can be incorporated into the relevant DoD programs to enable reliable EMR operation in disruptive network environments.
