Research abstract

Tactical networks may potentially encounter interference in their operational environment, from a range of possible sources.  In order to maintain a fully connected network, where every node can communicate with any other node, it is imperative to consider intelligent solutions that leverage all available means to mitigate the impact of potential interference on the network as a whole.  These include PHY layer enhancements (e.g. receive antenna diversity, digital signal processing (multiple-input interference cancellation / signal separation), Adaptive Coding and Modulation (ACM), etc.), MAC layer enhancements (e.g. intelligent routing, link state adaptation, distributed network health and status monitoring, transmit signal diversity), and even operator feedback (e.g. suggested pitch/yaw adjustment to effect improved antenna diversity).  To efficiently solve this complex multi-faceted problem, Adaptive Dynamics, Inc. proposes DIAMOND-GEMINI, a cross-layer multi-platform solution that leverages prior TRL 8 Interference Mitigation technologies with other PHY layer enhancement strategies to maintain full network connectivity and maximize throughput in challenging interference environments.  Initial performance simulations indicate that the proposed DIAMOND-GEMINI architecture can maintain a fully connected network with high probability as long as the SNR for each link remains a few dB above threshold, independent of the ISR.
