Research abstract

The Air Force has a need for low-cost, short takeoff and landing vehicles to provide recovery and transport support in contested areas while minimizing the required number of operational personnel. An autonomous vehicle capable of 100 miles operational radius, cruise speed greater than 100 kts at 4000 ft, and takeoff/landing zone of 50 ft x 50 ft is desired to perform combat search and rescue, as well as, small team transport. A low-cost aircraft allows the Air Force to increase the number of assets available for support while an autonomous system decreases the amount of time required for insertion, which is of crucial importance regarding the rescuability of isolated personnel (IP). Key enabling technologies such as high lift control surfaces, distributed propulsion for increased lift and maneuverability, and advanced hybrid-electric system designs have the potential to significantly increase the takeoff and landing capability of existing airframes while maintaining or increasing the vehicle range. Cornerstone Research Group, Inc. (CRG) brings multi-disciplinary aircraft design and analysis capability tailored for STOL aircraft, experience with the enabling power and propulsion technologies, and the ability to implement composites and other airframe modifications to the challenge for delivering a low-cost air vehicle that meets military operational
