Research abstract

Cornerstone Research Group, Inc. (CRG) is developing a low-profile, conformal helmet-mounted sensor that leverages ultra-low power, miniature components with optimized low-power circuitry to gather acceleration data during an ejection event. This, combined with a smart algorithm to reduce power consumption, enables a system that is compatible with routine aircrew wear. The device is small enough to fit with inside the helmet without notice, and will not need regular upkeep to maintain functionality. In Phase I, CRG developed an ultra-low power, light-weight, conformal patch design for the sensor system, which minimizes decoupling/transfer function from sensor to the head meeting program objectives without compromising safety. CRG demonstrated functionality of the algorithms and components through benchtop testing, successfully recording acceleration data while utilizing smart power management techniques. In Phase II, CRG will leverage the Phase I sensor system design to more quickly implement a prototype biodynamic acceleration sensor system, followed by design concept validation and performance demonstrations. In addition, CRG will refine the design, update algorithms, refine packaging, and demonstrate data acquisition performance in field representative environments.
