Research abstract

There is a growing need for compact, low cost, high resolution sensor systems capable of operating when poor weather conditions impair existing optical systems. Millimeter-wave (mmW) systems offer an excellent solution to this challenge: they are less vulnerable to these impairments while still providing higher resolution and smaller form factors than lower frequency systems. As silicon-based mmW processes continue to mature, active mmW imaging sensors have become an increasingly attractive option for meeting the current situational awareness shortfall. MaXentric has teamed with North Carolina State University (NCSU) to develop a silicon-based W-band 2-D video imaging system under an effort codenamed MIRAS (mm-Wave Imaging with Repurposed Arrays). During Phase I, our team investigated the mmW imaging parameter and topology tradespace to create a prototype blueprint for future fabrication, testing, and demonstration. The proposed Phase II effort will focus on developing a high TR-level 2-D W-band imaging system using NCSUs radar IC. The fabricated prototype will be characterized, demonstrated, and delivered. Additionally, a preliminary prototype will be created for early Phase II testing and risk mitigation.
