Research abstract

ABSTRACT: Global Positioning System capabilities have become common place technology with several countries developing their own Global Navigation Satellite Systems (GNSS) leading to different frequency bands of operation. To provide service for multiple satellite bands reconfiguring on-the-fly to utilize a particular band that is available and non-interference-jammed, a truly "Universal GNSS Receiver" is needed. To meet this demand, the MaXentric / UTK team proposes a Universal GNSS Receiver, which utilizes an adaptive null steering antenna array that covers the full GNSS bands, a fully integrated receiver with tunable / reconfigurable multi-band filter developed in CMOS technology, and a demonstration with a commercial GNSS receiver for proof-of-feasibility. The entire design will be focused toward minimal SWAP for hand-held applications.; BENEFIT: The Department of Defense plans to continue upgrading all three segments of the Global Positioning System, investing $7.3 billion from 2012 through 2016 and $15 billion over the subsequent nine years. There is a clear DoD need for future systems to be universal in their capabilities to function with the developing GNSS systems. The anticipated benefit of the Universal GNSS Receiver is added capabilities beyond what is currently available (improved reconfiguration, performance, and integration). Applications range from Military GPS User Equipment (MGUE) or in-the-filed usage by Air Force or Army improving service.
