Research abstract

For the SWAP-3D Phase I SBIR project, Vcom3D will design, prototype, and evaluate methods for simulating the progression of wounds and how various interventions impact the healing process. At least two display types will be compared: (1) flexible thin film transistor (TFT) displays that conform to manikins or human actors and (2) “naked eye”, tablet-based 3D Augmented Reality (AR) displays that use light-field optics to enable binocular viewing of 3D renderings of wound progression from varying angles and distances, without the need for goggles. In each case, a detailed 3D model of the wound will be created. The shape, coloration, and reflectivity of the 3D model will morph over time to show how both topical and systemic treatments assist or detract from the healing process.  Homeostasis and inflammatory stages will be modeled for Phase I, with the ability to model proliferation and remodeling stages in later phases of the project. Avulsion, burn and/or frostbite patient cases will be evaluated. The tablet-based 3D displays will include the ability to perform initial treatment on physical manikins or task trainers and observe the impact on wound progression using AR overlays. This project will build on Vcom3D’s expertise in 3D modeling and rendering of traumatic injuries and their progression, originally demonstrated in its Mixed Reality Trainer and Advanced Morphing Moulage projects. In Phase I, these will be viewed using commercial off-the-shelf (COTS), flexible TFT and 3D Light-Field tablet displays. Comparative evaluation of modeling, rendering, and display types will inform the selection for Phase II of best 3D graphics techniques and display technologies, potentially including new technologies previously not considered. Throughout the project, Vcom3D will have access to the guidance and evaluation of experienced military and civilian first responders and instructors.
