Research abstract

The goal of the Casualty Care Training (CCT) Phase II SBIR research is to develop a system that effectively and efficiently trains military first responders to perform the skills utilizing a mixed reality (MR) system that includes an anatomically correct female manikin and physical task trainers, which can be supplemented by virtual and augmented reality, and that also provides Soldier training feedback. To meet these needs, Vcom3D proposes a Mixed Reality Trainer for Female Combat Casualty Care (MRT-FC3), including the following: A high-performance, anatomically accurate, Modular Healthcare Simulation and Education System (MoHSES)-compliant female trauma manikin that simulates treatment of Massive Hemorrhage, Airway, Respirations, Circulation, and Head Injury/Hypothermia (MARCH) in accordance with Tactical Combat Casualty Care (TCCC). Two Augmented Reality (AR) Modules. An AR Module for the Learner displays virtual overlays to present didactic information, show underlying anatomy, demonstrate procedures, and supplement the manikin's presentation of injury-related and physiological cues. An AR Module for the Instructor supports management of the scenario, assignment of injuries, and student assessment. Virtual medical equipment including at least a patient monitor, ventilator, and labs. As part of its Phase I CCT project, Vcom3D demonstrated the feasibility of using the MoHSES platform standard to achieve interoperability and registration between manikins and AR displays. For Phase II we will further develop MRT-FC3 and demonstrate its effectiveness and usability for training a selection of 68W critical skills
