Research abstract

For this Phase I SBIR project, Vcom3D will research and design a modular Mixed Reality (MR) medical manikin training system that builds on the Modular Healthcare Simulation and Education System (MoHSES) specifications and open-source resources. We will develop and demonstrate a proof-of-concept Mixed Reality Trainer for Female Combat Casualty Care (MRT-FC3) system that shows the concept of operation of this system. This proof-of-concept will include each of the following: A high-performance, MoHSES-compliant female trauma manikin with an accurate simulation of airway, breathing with chest motion, and arterial bleeding from a below-the-knee amputation (BKA). Simulated treatment of pneumothorax, hypovolemia, and partial leg amputation. Two AR Modules for Learners and Instructors that provide virtual overlays to augment the cues provided by the manikin. Virtual medical equipment including at least a patient monitor, ventilator, and STAT lab tests. Using this Proof-of-Concept system, we will address these Research Questions: What perceptual cues, required for Combat Medic training, can be rendered more realistically or more cost effectively using AR overlays? Can the MoHSES platform support the interoperability requirements of a modular Mixed Reality Combat Casualty Care Training System? What extensions to the standard can help promote its applicability and usability for this application? How can the platform be enhanced to better promote its adoption by medical simulation stakeholders? What are the most important female injuries and treatments for which new training capabilities are required?
