Research abstract

Dagger is a next-generation hybrid-electric vertical takeoff and landing (VTOL) unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) designed to address one of the most critical capability gaps in modern military operations: persistent intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance (ISR), automated target recognition (ATR), and tactical communications support in GPS-denied, electromagnetically contested, and infrastructure-degraded environments. Engineered specifically for expeditionary deployment, Dagger uniquely combines amphibious launch and recovery, autonomous navigation, edge-processed ISR, and low-signature performance in a Group 2/3 UAV optimized for the needs of the Department of the Air Force (DAF) and Joint Forces.Unlike traditional UAVs, which rely on fixed infrastructure, permissive electromagnetic environments, and predictable terrain, Dagger operates independently from ground control stations, satellites, or structured runways. It is the only U.S.-developed platform in its class that enables true amphibious operations—capable of VTOL from and landing on saltwater, snow, or rugged terrain—without the need for launchers, nets, or additional recovery equipment. This critical feature supports Agile Combat Employment (ACE) concepts and expands force projection across island chains, coastal theaters, and distributed airfields central to Indo-Pacific operations. At the core of Dagger’s autonomy stack is a GPS-denied navigation system leveraging onboard artificial intelligence/machine learning (AI/ML) fused with visual odometry, terrain-relative flight, and inertial sensing. This architecture enables robust real-time navigation, drift correction, and threat avoidance without satellite connectivity. Complemented by a modular payload bay, the system supports rapid field-level integration of EO/IR sensors for ISR, onboard ATR processing, and tactical communications relay—enabling one platform to flexibly support multi-mission objectives with minimal reconfiguration or logistical overhead.Designed for operational resilience, Dagger is sealed and corrosion-resistant, with proven performance in salt spray, extreme humidity, snow, and rain. It is ruggedized for transport in tactical vehicles or standard pelican cases, with two-person setup in under 30 minutes. The platform’s hybrid-electric propulsion system supports ultra-quiet flight and minimized thermal/electromagnetic signatures, making it suitable for covert missions in heavily contested or denied environments.
