Research abstract

LOGIA, the Local Guide for Intelligent Assistance, is designed to allow the DoD to locally deploy foundational machine learning models. The system is designed from the ground-up with the Authority to Operate (ATO) process in mind.áOur Modular Open Systems Approach (MOSA) divides the problems into three layers: the interface layer, the foundational layer, and the data layer. The interface layer allows users to authenticate and interact with the system. This layer routes voice or text requests to the appropriate machine learning model but also contains guardrails both for ethical concerns as well as defending against things like prompt injection attacks. The foundational layer contains open-source foundational models such as Large Language Models (LLMs), some of which have been fine-tuned for specific tasks using RAFT (Retrieval Augmented Fine Tuning). This separate layer allows for rapid adding or updating of existing models as the technology landscape continuously evolves. The data layer ensures that the foundational models only have access to the same data the user has access to when answering queries, avoiding the problem of aggregating data and raising the classification level. With this architecture, LOGIA enables rapid adoption of foundational models in the DoD and helps scale proven Al-enabled solutions for enterprise and joint use cases.á
