Research abstract

Virtual Reality (VR) and Augmented Reality (AR) are increasingly used in Navy training, offering visually immersive conditions for both individual and team training. Despite their modern appeal, these technologies alone do not guarantee effective training and may not produce the intended learning gains in situations with close instructor-student interaction. This research aims to define a VR / AR learning system that includes adaptive capabilities to support and improve student competency via real-time monitoring of student performance. The inclusion of adaptive learning capabilities intends to improve learning outcomes compared to current methodologies. The focus of this research is to identify and create a versatile system design that can be applied to various Navy jobs, ratings, and domains. Dignitas proposes a solution that aligns learning objectives and performance outcomes from the course review and analysis process with the latest advancements in virtual environments, mixed reality, and adaptive training concepts. Research will include sources such as GPS and research-grade wearable sensors, and capabilities such as eye tracking to generate data to assess performance in a virtual environment. By implementing adaptive learning capabilities that merges traditional course assessment information and virtual performance data, we anticipate a holistic view of the training situation will appear.
