Research abstract

CRG proposes to demonstrate feasibility of an environmental boundary system to reduce the time and cost of performing composite repair. This technology will also increase the quality of the repair for composite parts on platforms, such as the V22, due to the ability to keep the repair area contained. CRG has a unique concept that will accomplish the goal of environmental containment yet still allow easy repair. The concept is comprised of a lightweight truss structure that provides support to a clear plastic film. The trusses may be a semi-flexible, lightweight plastic, or even shape memory polymer (SMP), which will provide great benefit in stowing the system. The system will include hand ports that allow passage of hands and materials through the containment system while sealing automatically without any powered activation device. This design will prevent dirt or dust to pass through while the repair is ongoing. The hand ports also allow the repair technician to use any type of gloves, improving the dexterity and cleanliness of the repair environment. This system will be self-supporting and provides a unique way of transferring materials without using the traditional glove box approach. It will be stowable, lightweight, and cost effective.
