Research abstract

This work will lead to the demonstration of a navigation grade gyroscope with improved performance achieved through a novel high output intensity, noise reduced optical source. The source, which will be defined in Phase I, will make use of wavelength stable Er doped fiber seed and amplifier stages, and will provide intensity noise reduction (RIN) by the use of feedback to a waveguide variable attenuator. Shot noise will be controlled by the high available output power levels from the source. Polarization control will be provided as necessary depending on the choice of components. Component selection will be made considering both noise reduction potential and overall power efficiency. A noise analysis for all noise contributions to the gyro will be made, comparing the designed source with more conventional ones, and the designed source both with and without the feedback loop operational. This design and analysis effort will provide the foundation for the construction of the source and test with a navigation grade gyro provided by the C. S. Draper Navigation Test Facility in Phase II.
