Research abstract

This proposal addresses innovative, economical and safe methods to manufacture periodically oriented gallium arsenide and other III-V semiconductor materials for use in efficient quasi-phase-matched nonlinear optical devices. These crystals have the potential to revolutionize mid-IR nonlinear devices. Periodically oriented gallium arsenide allows for engineering nonlinear interactions, providing a high degree of flexibility and innovation to devices. In the infrared region, second harmonic generation of CO2 laser radiation as well as broadly tunable optical parametric oscillation in the infrared are just two examples of recent devices enabled by this technology. These devices in turn are enablers for applications such as Infrared Countermeasure (IRCM) that would greatly benefit from frequency-agile infrared sources.
