Research abstract
A 24-month, $749,669 effort is proposed for development of fast running models that predict response and damage for three classes of common structural components: concrete masonry unit walls, reinforced concrete columns, and reinforced concrete beams. These models will consist of mathematical formulations which reproduce the essential results from a large number of high fidelity physics-based finite element calculations, thus combining the physical realism of high fidelity models with the rapid execution of engineering tools. These models are then slated to be incorporated into the MEVA code developed for the AFRL to perform munitions effectiveness studies. The models will use standard parametric inputs that define the dimensions and properties of the structural member along with the applied loads. As a minimum, the parametric range covered by STMG-generated targets will be fully encompassed by the models. Outputs will include damage, response, and debris estimates for each element. The physics-based models will incorporate a number of realistic effects, including fragment damage to hollow and grouted CMU, blast load distributions, axial loads in concrete columns, and distinctions in load direction for concrete beams.
