Research abstract

Verne’s innovation increases the energy density of hydrogen systems by >50%, greatly enhancing operational capacity of delivered energy and power systems. Verne accomplishes this by storing hydrogen as a cold and compressed gas, known as cryo-compressed hydrogen. This work will leverage this innovation to develop and demonstrate a high-density containerized hydrogen storage system (Figure 1). The demonstrated system will exhibit >50% greater energy density than the gaseous hydrogen alternative being used today. The Verne system will be used to charge battery systems, such as vehicles. Overall, this work can decrease the logistical burden of alternative fuels like hydrogen (e.g. lower frequency refueling) and enable operators to electrify operations today without needing to connect to an electrical grid or rely on diesel infrastructure.
