Research abstract

As the U.S. Army continues to modernize its forces with high-tech soldier-worn and handheld equipment such as radios, GPS, night-vision devices and weapons, the reliable and long-lasing energy storage demand is continually increasing. This, undoubtedly, will continue in the future as new capabilities with higher-power weapons, novel sensors and robots, and advanced computing are envisioned. Advanced energy storage devices for warfighters are needed, which are addressed by PiersicaÆs technology of a lighter, faster-charging, higher performance, and safer battery. Piersica is developing a solid-state, high energy density Li-ion battery technology that can provide a safer, more efficient, and more effective power source to replace the ArmyÆs standard Li-ion battery systems. The key differentiator of PiersicaÆs technology is the utilization of exceptionally light polymeric lithium conductors which maximize the energy density of the battery. Piersica will package two revolutionary proprietary technologies in a new battery cell design: (1) a solid polymer electrolyte which is compatible with high-voltage cathodes and has higher conductivities than commercial separators, and (2) a high surface area fast-charge lithium metal anode. Solid-state Li-ion batteries have the potential to improve the performance of portable electronics, electric vehicles, and grid-scale energy storage. They can offer higher energy densities, faster charging times, and longer cycle lives compared to conventional Li-ion batteries. They are also more resistant to high temperatures, which can damage conventional Li-ion batteries. PiersicaÆs solid-state Li-ion battery technology is a key development that could significantly enhance the capabilities of the U.S. Army and improve the safety and effectiveness of its operations.
