Research abstract

Precursor SPC is a data analytics and decision support platform that goes beyond situational awareness and uses Machine Learning (ML) Nowcasting to deliver real-time actionable information of the actual Space environment to the Warfighter to make high confidence, consequential operational and tactical decisions.  The United States Space Force has a national defense-related mission need in the area of Assured Access to Space, Mission Assurance, and Launch Support, specifically requiring real-time Space Weather reporting for Day of Launch (DOL) operations. Current weather reporting methods rely on predictive, physics-based models that provide broad forecasts but lack the real-time, high-fidelity space weather intelligence necessary for rapid decision-making. As a result, Mission Directors, Launch Providers, and Military Ranges do not use these models during DOL operations, leaving critical launch decisions vulnerable to undetected space weather risks with potentially catastrophic results The objective of this Direct-Phase II applied R&D initiative is to demonstrate using Precursor’s Space Weather Nowcasting platform the ability to Nowcast the actual Space Weather environment in real-time to identify the current conditions, detect Space Weather anomalies and to a provide near-term forecast of the Space Weather environment for launch planning, during launch operations, at payload deployment and during reentry.  The deliverable is a Day of Launch Space Weather Nowcasting dashboard reporting near real-time data on the Space Weather environment.
