Research abstract

PrisAM proposes the development of Lattice Core Sandwich Panels (LCSP) as an advanced solution for micrometeoroid and orbital debris (MMOD) shielding in space vehicles. Current shielding technologies, such as honeycomb-core sandwich panels (HCSP) and traditional Whipple shields, face limitations in impact dissipation due to their structural constraints. LCSPs, by contrast, utilize a multi-shock effect that disperses impact energy more efficiently, reducing penetration risk and structural damage. The proposed Phase II effort will optimize LCSP designs for MMOD shielding applications, leveraging advanced additive manufacturing techniques to create lightweight, structurally resilient panels. The project builds on a successful Phase I feasibility study that demonstrated the effectiveness of LCSPs in high-velocity impact scenarios. Key results included experimental validation of LCSPs' superior impact resistance compared to HCSPs, with enhanced debris dispersion and improved energy dissipation. In collaboration with AFRL/RX and AFRL/RV, the Phase II objectives include:Numerical Modeling & Design Optimization – Developing hydrocode models to predict LCSP performance under hypervelocity impacts.Manufacturing & Prototyping – Producing LCSP configurations with graded-density lattice structures to maximize shielding efficiency.High-Velocity Impact Testing – Conducting controlled impact tests at the University of Dayton Research Institute to validate experimental and computational results.PrisAM’s technology aligns with multiple Department of the Air Force operational imperatives, particularly in enhancing space resilience, supporting rapid mission reconstitution, and enabling lightweight, cost-efficient structural solutions. Beyond defense applications, LCSPs offer significant commercial potential in aerospace, heavy vehicles, and infrastructure. This effort will position LCSPs as a next-generation MMOD shielding solution, offering a scalable and manufacturable alternative to traditional space shielding technologies.
