Research abstract
To address the DAF's need for resilient, continuous energy and lighting solutions in austere and contested environments, Reflect Orbital, Inc. proposes an innovative space-based solar power and illumination system. Current energy and lighting solutions face critical limitations, particularly in Agile Combat Employment (ACE) scenarios where fuel resupply is constrained, and solar power is intermittent. Reflect Orbital's technology deploys a constellation of low-Earth orbit (LEO) satellite reflectors to redirect sunlight onto terrestrial solar panels, ensuring uninterrupted energy production and on-demand lighting. This system enhances nighttime solar power generation, reducing reliance on fuel convoys and mitigating operational risks. The reflector constellation dynamically adjusts to support both fixed installations and mobile operations, seamlessly integrating with existing solar infrastructure. By delivering scalable, persistent energy and illumination, this capability aligns with DAF operational imperatives, including resilient basing and readiness to deploy and fight. The proposed Phase II effort will focus on advancing reflector deployment, orbital maneuvering, and sunlight redirection technology, culminating in an in-orbit demonstration. The outcome will validate a transformative solution for sustaining military operations with renewable energy, reducing logistical vulnerabilities, and enhancing mission effectiveness in contested domains.
