Research abstract
Solestial exists to deliver abundant energy to space, revolutionizing the way satellites harness solar power. Our team is pioneering an innovative, on-demand, and rapidly manufacturable solar array wing platform specifically designed for small satellites. Unlike conventional solutions, our platform excels in versatility and efficiency, capable of operating seamlessly across various orbits, including Medium Earth Orbit (MEO), Geostationary Earth Orbit (GEO), and cis-Lunar space. Solestial's cutting-edge technology empowers satellite missions with unprecedented energy reliability and scalability. The United States Armed Forces currently lack the ability to deploy assets in space quickly and at scale, in comparison to foreign adversaries. The DAF has emphasized the need to concentrate its space-related endeavors on resilient space missions. A key aspect of this focus involves modernizing components to make them more accessible, universally adaptable and readily available. Solestial will use the capability it previously developed for the commercial satellite market to demonstrate that solar array wings for tactical response satellites can be rapidly produced and integrated to support the goals of the SSC Space Safari program. Solestial has previously developed a fully customizable solar cell and solar module technologies and is currently ramping up 1 MW/year production of solar cells and modules in Tempe, Arizona. The core feature of Solestial’s solar cells is their superior radiation hardness. This is achieved by enabling an efficient annealing of radiation-induced defects in Solestial solar cells at operating conditions, which no other solar technology with a similar starting performance level can achieve. Unique radiation hardness of Solestial solar cells opens their use in higher altitudes including the orbits passing Van Allen radiation belts where the daily dose of radiation could be 100 times higher than in LEO. Further, solar power module technology developed by Solestial is uniquely compatible simultaneously with high Atomic Oxygen and frequent thermal cycling loads typical for lower orbit as well as higher temperature extremes and radiation loads typical for higher orbits. Thus, Solestial modules can be universally used in near Earth space and achieve minimum degradation during their lifespan.
