Research abstract

The Department of the Air Force (DAF) faces increasing threats to its communication infrastructure from adversarial electronic warfare (EW) and cyberattacks. Traditional networks relying on satellites, centralized hubs, or GPS are vulnerable in contested environments. Trabus Technologies’ Spectrally Efficient Peer-to-Peer (SEPP) Communication System addresses this critical need by providing a decentralized, infrastructure-free solution for secure, resilient, and high-throughput communication.SEPP is a low-cost, self-configuring network that operates independently of fixed infrastructure, ensuring continuous voice, video, and data transmission across dispersed units. SEPP is a software defined waveform on a module that uses commercial devices as the user interface.  SEPP features dynamic waveform agility, allowing it to reconfigure routing in real time, mitigate jamming, and function in GPS-denied environments. Unlike conventional systems that collapse under electronic attack, SEPP provides adaptive connectivity through multi-hop relay technology, expanding the communication range beyond direct device-to-device line-of-sight (LOS) links. This ensures warfighters maintain critical connectivity even under extreme electromagnetic threats. The Phase II effort focuses on adapting SEPP for Air Force Global Strike Command (AFGSC), initially leveraging the SEPP prototype model with subsequent migration to DoD-approved software-defined radios (SDRs). The project will develop a production-ready SEPP software architecture, optimize RF hardware for tactical environments, and conduct extensive lab and field testing under simulated operational conditions.Beyond defense applications, SEPP has significant commercial potential in emergency response, disaster recovery, and critical infrastructure protection. Traditional communication networks often fail in natural disasters, cyber incidents, or physical infrastructure damage, leaving first responders or critical infrastructure assets without reliable connectivity. SEPP’s infrastructure-free, spectrum-efficient networking offers a solution to maintain uninterrupted communication in these scenarios.SEPP’s potential impact extends to both military and civilian markets, delivering a next-generation, infrastructure-independent communication capability essential for national security and commercial resilience. This Phase II effort will validate SEPP’s operational effectiveness and set the stage for transition into Air Force and Space Force programs of record.
