Research abstract

The proposed work focuses on the development and validation of the Hyperspectral Low Earth Orbit (HyLEO) Payload, a long-wave infrared (LWIR) hyperspectral imaging (HSI) system designed for Low Earth Orbit (LEO)-based Intelligence, Surveillance, and Reconnaissance (ISR) and Measurement and Signals Intelligence (MASINT) applications. The HyLEO Payload aims to provide near-real-time, high-resolution ISR capabilities in a low-cost, size, weight, and power (C-SWaP) form factor, supporting tactical mission applications across the Department of Defense.  The HyLEO system leverages LWIR spectral bands to detect chemicals, materials, paints, vehicles, camouflage, disturbed earth, and spectral signatures associated with Weapons of Mass Destruction (WMD) development and deployment. Operating in the thermal band of the IR spectrum, the system provides day/night ISR coverage, enhancing capabilities in counter-proliferation, treaty monitoring, and global security efforts.Current ISR platforms relying on electro-optical and panchromatic imaging cannot identify chemical signatures, thermal anomalies, and precursor by-products associated with WMD production, storage, and transportation. The HyLEO Payload addresses these gaps by providing persistent, high-revisit monitoring and real-time tactical ISR.  Spectrum Photonics, the developer of the HyLEO Payload, brings deep expertise in hyperspectral imaging technology, long-wave infrared remote sensing methods, and advanced data processing solutions. The company has a proven track record of delivering cutting-edge spectral imaging systems for DoD and intelligence community applications. The proposed effort will extend the design, development, and validation of the HyLEO Payload for space-based deployment previously funded SBIR activities. The project aims to deliver a proof-of-concept payload capable of unparalleled spectral and spatial resolution in a highly cost-effective SmallSat payload configuration for tactical ISR applications in LEO. Upon completion of the Phase III effort, the HyLEO Payload will be a fully integrated, space-qualified ISR system capable of providing near-real-time detection and characterization of mission-relevant threats.
