Research abstract

The U.S. Air Force must modernize infrastructure maintenance and emergency response to sustain operational readiness. The 2025 Budget Request prioritizes "Readiness to Deploy and Fight" and "Resilient Basing," but outdated maintenance practices and aging infrastructure pose significant risks to these objectives. With over 150,000 confined spaces requiring inspections, Airmen are routinely exposed to hazardous gases, explosive vapors, and unstable structures, increasing risk, cost, and reducing mission readiness. Many bases still rely on manual inspections of underground steam lines, utility chassis, and fuel storage areas despite these lethal hazards. At Wright-Patterson AFB alone, over 8,000 confined spaces require routine entry, further straining personnel resources amid declining enlistment and escalating competition with adversaries like China. With the FY26 budget allocating over $77 billion for Operations and Maintenance, next-generation technologies that enhance safety and efficiency are urgently needed. The Phase I feasibility study validated the Air Force’s urgent need for an alternative to manual confined space inspections, securing high-level backing from Ellsworth and Wright-Patterson AFBs. Valkim Technologies proposes research and development (R&D) adaptations to its intrinsically safe, Zone 0-certified crawling robot, designed to eliminate hazardous personnel entry while improving inspection efficiency. Unlike any existing commercial offerings, no intrinsically safe robotic system currently exists for confined space inspections, making this a first-of-its-kind capability. The proposed R&D efforts will focus on software enhancements, system integration, and mission-specific payloads rather than extensive hardware modifications. This approach ensures continuous innovation while maintaining the system’s core function as a safe, autonomous confined-space inspection solution aligned with DAF mission requirements and deployment timelines. To meet Air Force needs, Valkim Technologies will adapt the robot’s payload system to incorporate military-specific sensors, including high-resolution cameras and gas detection tools, enabling seamless operation within DAF protocols. These adaptations will ensure compliance with Air Force safety and operational standards while keeping manufacturing processes consistent across federal and commercial customers.  Integrating this robotic solution into Air Force operations will provide a scalable, force-multiplying capability that enhances readiness, ensures personnel safety, and modernizes installation resilience while reducing long-term sustainment costs.
