Research abstract

LaBr3 detectors show exceptional properties in terms of scintillation light yield, energy resolution, and fast emission. To date, this material is not available in the large sizes needed for a number of detector applications in high energy physics. This project will develop a growth process for this material, using model-based thermal engineering to reduce thermo-mechanical stresses in large diameter LaBr3 crystals. The success of this approach will result in availability of large size crystals, and will lower their manufacturing cost through increased process yield. Commercial Applications and other Benefits as described by the awardee: This project should result in the development of the materials needed for the full realization of LaBr3 detectors. LaBr3 detectors are exceptionally suited for use in the identification of radio-isotopes, with applications as inspection tools in homeland security, Positron Emission Tomography (PET), and scintimammography in medicine.
