Research abstract

Air Force operations in disconnected, degraded, intermittent, and limited (DDIL) environments urgently require reliable, low-latency access to data. Traditional centralized data storage methods become liabilities when communications are jammed or disrupted, risking loss of mission-critical information, increased latency, or even total isolation. Our proposal introduces Hadron, a decentralized, IPFS-based storage solution capable of maintaining data availability under adverse conditions by distributing content among nodes rather than relying on a single central repository. By leveraging content hashing and automatic replication, Hadron mitigates single points of failure, detects data tampering, and reduces bandwidth usage through local caching. It also integrates seamlessly with DoD DevSecOps platforms (e.g., Platform One, Big Bang) and operates on government-authorized clouds (Cloud One, AWS GovCloud, Azure Gov). This enables rapid deployment across diverse Air Force domains with minimal integration friction. Phase II objectives include configuring Hadron for secure, air-gapped environments, validating performance against key metrics (e.g., zero data loss in simulated network outages), and optimizing DevSecOps processes for continuous delivery of updates. Early feasibility studies at Hill AFB with stakeholders from 309 SWEG confirm the technology’s practicality in contested networks. By building upon a proven commercial IPFS base and augmenting it with security hardening, offline synchronization, and robust identity and access management, we deliver a resilient, scalable solution for operational environments at the tactical edge. The end result: rapid, trusted data delivery that keeps warfighters informed, reduces downtime, and bolsters mission effectiveness in even the most compromised communications scenarios.
