Research abstract

Thermal longwave infrared (LWIR) sensors are crucial for Army applications such as surveillance and targeting. However, traditional high-resolution LWIR sensors face challenges related to size, weight, power consumption, and cost. The Army SBIR Program seeks to enhance these sensors by improving image processing, integrating multiple sensor modalities, and strengthening the industrial base for sensor components. Owl Autonomous Imaging (Owl AI) addresses these challenges by leveraging advanced AI/ML algorithms within its compact automotive LWIR Focal Plane Array (FPA) and Camera Core Component, enabling sophisticated object classification, segmentation, monocular ranging, and real-time optimized image processing. Responding to sub-topic 3: Image processing for thermal imagers, Owl AI’s expertise in AI/ML is driving the development of multi-modal fusion techniques. These techniques combine LWIR sensors with other modalities to significantly enhance performance and resilience in a wide range of challenging environments. By integrating these advanced technologies, Owl AI aims to provide a solution that not only meets but exceeds the Army’s stringent requirements for enhanced real-time operational effectiveness. This ensures that warfighters are equipped with the most advanced and reliable tools, significantly improving their capabilities in the field.
