Research abstract

The Framerate and Image Enhancement for Low-cost Devices (FIELD) solution is a cutting-edge system that significantly enhances low-resolution, low-frame-rate video from uncooled thermal sensors using Generative Adversarial Networks (GANs). The primary goal is to overcome the limitations of current thermal imaging technologies by implementing a multi-stage process that includes GAN-based super-resolution for spatial enhancement and temporal frame interpolation to increase frame rates. The system is designed for real-time processing, ensuring that it delivers high-quality, high-resolution video suitable for critical applications like surveillance, autonomous navigation, industrial monitoring, and search and rescue operations. By addressing key challenges such as high computational demands, temporal consistency, and noise reduction, the system ensures smooth, artifact-free video output with clear details, even in low-light or adverse weather conditions. Additionally, the system is scalable and adaptable to various hardware platforms, making it versatile for deployment in diverse environments. This innovative approach offers significant advantages over existing methods, providing enhanced image clarity, reduced noise, and more natural motion, thereby improving the reliability and effectiveness of thermal imaging systems in applications where visual accuracy and responsiveness are paramount.
