Research abstract

Thermal longwave infrared (LWIR) capabilities are crucial for Army applications like surveillance and targeting. However, most imaging sensor Readout Integrated Circuits (ROICs) used by the Department of Defense are based on outdated semiconductor processes. Transitioning to advanced nodes (65 nm or lower) is highly desirable for improved performance, power efficiency, and size reduction but poses risks due to the lack of verified, reusable intellectual property (IP) blocks. This effort aims to develop a modern IP library of designed, fabricated, and verified circuit blocks tailored for advanced ROIC designs. Key features include:• Standardized Block Interfaces: Establishing well-defined interfaces to facilitate integration into various Process Design Kits (PDKs), enabling reuse across multiple designs, and reducing development time and costs.• Leveraging Delta-Sigma Modulator Technology: Shifting analog functions into digital-friendly blocks through Delta-Sigma Modulator (DSM) technology, simplifying integration.• Robust Verification Environment: Creating a comprehensive Mixed-Signal Verification environment to ensure all IP blocks meet performance and reliability standards, minimizing design risks. Owl Autonomous Imaging (Owl AI) has pioneered a modern HD ROIC using the 22nm Global Foundries 22FDX node. Integrated with VOx µBolometers, this architecture is ideal for a reusable IP library, reducing risks and enabling more capable LWIR systems for military and dual-use applications.?
