Research abstract

The severe voltage, speed, and size specifications of Klystron modulators in the International Linear Collider, a facility important to DOE high-energy-physics research, may neccessitate the development of ultra-high-voltage, SiC semiconductor switches. These switches need to be optimized for pulsed-power requirements because of the unique specifications for Klystron modulators: ultra-high voltage, small rise/fall times, and high-pulsed current. Therefore, this project will develop an ultra-high-voltage switch and insert it into an appropriate power module for Klystron modulator circuits. These switches would have the potential to reduce the size, weight, volume, and cost of solid-state power-conditioning circuits in pulse transformers, Marx banks, buck converters, and high frequency converter modules by an order of magnitude, while increasing the power efficiencies to greater than 95%. Detailed analytical and simulation modeling of promising and novel SiC device structures is planned in Phase I, along with fabrication experiments. Phase II will involve the construction and demonstration of a device and module that are most relevant for solid-state Klystron modulator circuits. Commercial Applications And Other Benefits as described by the Applicant: The high speed and low component counts obtained from these ultra-high-voltage SiC switches should make 25 kV-200 kV systems more efficient and reliable. Industrial applications include electrostatic precipitators, oscilloscopes, and oil drilling. These systems also could be used for killing microorganisms in food processing, medical equipment sterilization, and wastewater treatment. In addition, high-voltage pulsed-power systems are used for lithography and ion implanters for wafer fabrication. Finally, the use of e-beams and X-ray systems for medical diagnostics and cancer treatment saves thousands of lives annually.
