Research abstract

The U.S. Army's need for enhanced thermal imaging and range-finding capabilities is critical to improving soldier-centric situational awareness and operational effectiveness in diverse combat environments. DeepNight’s proposed SBIR Phase I effort aims to address this need by exploring the technical feasibility of integrating our Deep Night Vision (DNV) computer vision software with thermal imaging and CMOS sensors, including thermal, CMOS, and IVAS sensors leveraged by the U.S. Army. DeepNight will develop, adapt, and technically validate a new implementation of DNV’s novel image processing techniques to enable zero-signature range-finding by these sensor platforms. By enabling passive range-finding through a combined thermal and CMOS stereo configuration directly on the sensor edge, the DNV solution will enable U.S. Army rangefinders to zero in on targets of interest in extremely low light scenarios without divulging the collector’s location.
