Research abstract

Tactical marine propulsion systems are at the forefront of development and currently need advanced solutions to extract greater operational capability and enhanced running efficiency while paying firm attention to lifecycle cost and overall system management. GreenSight (GS) proposes to continue the development of the OsmoFlow marine propulsion system, a novel hybrid-electric series-parallel power system uniquely suited for the Navy’s littoral patrol boat fleet. OsmoFlow intends to meet the needs and requirements of these vessels while offering modularity to suit the needs of various defense and commercial applications. Three primary development pathways are suggested: the electric drive unit, battery module design and management, and system logic and control algorithms. Each system is intended to be designed concurrently to offer optimized performance bespoke integration with the vessel and allow for flexibility and modularity to accept system upgrades for decades. Ingrained in the design will be modular hardware and software systems, adaptable to current and future systems. GS will focus on key performance-enhancing technologies, including developing axial flux motors, integrated battery system design and management protocols, and advanced mechanical systems communication and control. This will be achieved through a hardware-rich design, development, build, and test approach, giving GS more actionable data, higher fidelity results, and quick feedback on development and progress.
