Research abstract

GreenSight, in partnership with Transparent Sky, proposes the development of Navigation & Obstacle Visualization Assistant (NOVA), an AI enhanced terrain awareness and cognitive flight assistance system for low-altitude Army aviation. NOVA integrates 3D Gaussian Splatting (3DGS), reinforcement learning, and generative modeling to deliver real-time, high-fidelity terrain reconstruction and predictive path planning. The system fuses available sensor data, historical data, and mission telemetry to continuously update a shared terrain model, even in degraded visual environments. NOVA addresses the critical risk of controlled flight into terrain (CFIT) by capturing fine obstacles like cables and foliage.. It provides visual guidance that reduces pilot workload, enabling safer, lower, and faster flight in contested environments. Phase I will demonstrate 3DGS integration, terrain fidelity thresholds, and reinforcement learning pathing within simulated mission scenarios, supporting both defense and commercial low-altitude UxS applications.
