Research abstract

The OsmoExport system incorporates two primary components: the Motor Generator Unit (MGU) and the MGU Controller (MC). The MGU is a yokeless axial flux motor-generator based on GreenSight’s proven OsmoFlow hybrid motor-generator design. It features a stackable axial flux architecture capable of mounting directly to a vehicle’s engine crankshaft. It uniquely supports the U.S. Army’s Highly Efficient Power Provision and Power Projection System (HEPPPS) requirement. The system enables power to be converted, conditioned, and delivered in any form to and from various loads, addressing the Army’s ground vehicle power needs.OsmoExport is designed for compatibility with a wide range of heavy-duty engines, including the Caterpillar C7, C15, and C18, which power key Army vehicles such as the HEMTT, M-ATV, HET, and FMTV-A2. The MGU replaces the existing crankshaft harmonic damper unit without requiring modifications to the engine or cooling systems, offering a seamless retrofit or line fit installation. This eliminates the need for the vehicle’s alternator, resulting in minimal weight addition and no significant impact on the vehicle's performance or layout. The solution is being developed in close collaboration with Oshkosh Defense and Caterpillar, leveraging their expertise and deep understanding of Army requirements. These partnerships ensure that OsmoExport will meet operational needs and seamlessly transition from prototype to active service. The system provides a universal, exportable power solution that can significantly enhance the power projection capabilities of Army tactical vehicles, while also presenting potential commercial market applications.
