Research abstract

Low-probability-of-intercept (LPI) and low-probability-of-detection (LPD) signals are characterized by their deliberate efforts to minimize their detectability and exploit vulnerabilities in traditional detection systems. This poses challenges to Navy surveillance and countermeasure operations. Detection of LPI and LPD signals offers significant intelligence and situational awareness. Advancements in signal processing, most evidently radio frequency machine learning (RFML), allow for a wider library of LPI/LPD threats to be identified and countered. While advancing, there are still many challenges within wideband RFML techniques, allowing wideband LPI/LPD waveforms to enable covert communication.ArrowSlate is proposing an expandable open-architecture system capable of detecting wideband LPI/LPD threats in real time. WHISTLER identifies wideband threats, gathers identifying information, and broadcasts this endpoint information to appropriate countermeasures. This system is intended to convert raw signal data containing foe LPI/LPD threats into actionable knowledge for countermeasure support. WHISTLER will operate on a threshold 1GHz instantaneous bandwidth, objective 2.5GHz instantaneous bandwidth.
