Research abstract

Enhanced Surveillance at the Edge, Leveraging UUVs with Advanced Autonomy In a modern conflict with a peer competitor, a robust Intelligence Surveillance and Reconnaissance (ISR) sensing network utilizing stealthy sensors at the edge is critical to inform cross-domain kill chains key to Joint Force success.  Adversary cross-domain ISR networks in highly contested environments coupled with long range missile threats, require innovative, persistent ISR sensing of radio frequency signals of interest.  Accurate sensing of signals of interest is critical to identifying adversary operations, long range UUVs are ideal for these ISR missions providing a stealthy platform to deliver RF sensors to the tactical edge in contested environments.  Metron has partnered with a UUV manufacturer to provide mission autonomy that can perceive, react, mitigate, and accomplish complex ISR missions without human input while underway.   Metron is a leading provider of mission, payload, vehicle, and sensor agnostic Resilient Mission Autonomy™ solutions for defense and commercial applications. Our Autonomy Navigation Command & Control (ANCC) software suite provides advanced mission planning, multi-payload management, and complex mission accomplishment for long range UUVs. Autonomy includes adaptive planning; introspective perception of the UUV’s fuel cell and vehicle health, advanced navigation; and complex payload management. Unique features of ANCC maximize mission success through intelligent, mission-driven, adaptive, non-scripted decision making based on perception of the external environment and uncertainty in the operating picture, without requiring human intervention in or on the loop. ANCC leverages novel navigation; risk and resource aware planning; advanced mission execution utilizing proactive mission adaptation; and avoidance planning accounting for uncertainty and platform capabilities. ANCC has been a proven performer from the beginning on eight different unmanned UUVs for DARPA and NAVSEA.    ANCC’s strength lies in three key capabilities; it’s introspective autonomy continually evaluating UUV platform health; it’s extrospective autonomy utilizing organic sensing to accurately perceive its environment and avoid hazards, and its multi-objective mission accomplishment utilizing these capabilities (including fuel cell and payload management) to ensure mission priorities are accomplished.  Finally, Metron had developed software to condense detailed emitter detections into condensed message sets for rapid real-time transmission.  Metron also has developed data fusion software that streamlines ISR track information sharing to distributed Joint Forces.
