Research abstract

The USSF, as an information-age service, has the unique opportunity to execute and complete the first complete digital transformation effort within the Department of Defense (DoD). The agility and speed of USSF spaceports depends upon the efficiency and effectiveness of its infrastructure, which currently includes a large proportion of legacy systems. Without an infrastructure that creates and promotes a common data environment and open system architectures, the USSF cannot achieve the overall goals of concurrent launch operations support, rapid low-risk mission execution, homogenous operating procedures across ranges, and real-time inter-range/coast collaboration and data sharing.  Parry Labs, as open systems experts, helps USSF address these deficiencies and enable its digital transformation by defining a ground up Modular Open Systems Architecture (MOSA) aligned data environment that fosters open architecture systems design from the infrastructure level up to the application layer. By enabling LSPs to pre-integrate, simulate, conduct independent verification & validation (IV&V), and collaborate with the USSF from offsite in advance of launch operations, the government shortens individual mission execution schedules while simultaneously reducing risks. In addition, the commonality of data and process allows launch operations to proceed identically irrespective of spaceport or range (east/west coast). The purpose of this effort is to demonstrate how a reusable common operating environment can be defined with modular, MOSA-aligned software partitioning environment infrastructure to unify and homogenize spaceport data, enabling more secure, efficient, automated, risk-reduced, and informed launch operations for the government and LSPs.
